Atlanta, Ga., June 14, 2023: Equinox Open Library Initiative, a trusted leader in open source technology development and support for libraries, is excited to announce the arrival of Evergreen 3.11, the latest release of the award-winning library software used by more than 1,800 libraries worldwide. The Equinox team contributed 9 out of 10 of Evergreen 3.11’s major features and 23 out of 60 bug fixes.
As part of Equinox’s commitment to accessibility, Equinox has been improving Evergreen’s code to better support assistive technologies. This effort includes addressing the staff administration and the staff catalog screens to make them skimmable by their landmarks and headings for users with screen readers.
“Accessible design is important for library staff interfaces as well as patron-facing services,” said Stephanie Leary, Front End Developer at Equinox. “We are excited to address some of the barriers to accessibility that have made some administrative tasks difficult for assistive technology users. We are committed to sharing our developer resources in support of accessible software for library communities.”
Evergreen 3.11 also brings a number of improvements to libraries using Evergreen including expansion of the “Did You Mean” search suggestion feature, support for new kinds of custom penalties, and important architectural improvements. More detail about these and other features can be found in the release notes here: https://evergreen-ils.org/documentation/release/RELEASE_NOTES_3_11.html
“Equinox’s work for Evergreen 3.11 includes a lot of behind-the-scenes improvements that makes Evergreen faster and more efficient for library operations,” said Andrea Buntz Neiman, Project Manager for Software Development at Equinox. “For example, the new ‘Queued Ingest’ feature allows catalog and authority records to be updated in staged batches in the background – this is a huge improvement for library staff and one that addresses several long-standing community bugs. I’m really proud of this work and we’re excited to bring these kinds of infrastructure improvements to Evergreen, in addition to the more front-facing feature development work that we do.”
